It is non‑surgical periodontal therapies. It removes bacterial plaque and calculus from below the gum line. This includes the root surfaces. We recommend it for patients diagnosed with periodontitis with pocket depths of 4 mm or deeper. This reduces inflammation, helps gums re‑attach to the teeth, and prevents further bone loss. We perform SRP under local anesthesia for your comfort.
Many patients prefer SRP because it does not involve incisions or sutures. It is the standard first step in managing periodontitis before considering surgical options.
Untreated gum disease can lead to bone loss and loose teeth. SRP removes the bacteria that cause the disease. With proper home care and maintenance visits, many patients see improved gum health.
We measure pocket depths around each tooth, check for bleeding and gum recession, and take digital X‑rays or a panoramic image to assess bone levels.
SRP is usually performed on one half of the mouth or one full arch at a time. This depends on the extent of disease. We explain how many visits you will need and what to expect during and after the procedure.
To keep you comfortable, we numb the gums and surrounding areas for each quadrant being treated. You should not feel scraping or discomfort during the procedure. Most patients tolerate it well.
Using hand instruments and ultrasonic scalers, we carefully remove plaque and calculus from above and below the gum line. Then we smooth the root surfaces—this helps the gums reattach and makes it harder for bacteria to accumulate again.
Approximately 4–6 weeks after SRP, we measure your pocket depths again. Many patients show improvement. If deeper pockets remain, we may discuss additional treatments.
