What Is Gum Treatment?

It is very important to take care of the health of your gums. This effective procedure reduces inflammation. It also promotes the restoration of gum attachment to the teeth. We offer root planing and scaling, laser therapy, and topical antibiotics. Gum treatment can help prevent bleeding, recession, or weakening of the gums. It can also prevent tooth loss.

Why Patients Choose Gum Treatment at Sonora Dental

Non‑surgical approach whenever possible

Many patients prefer to avoid surgery. Our initial gum treatment is minimally invasive. We perform it under local anesthesia. In most cases, it does not involve incisions or sutures.

This treatment may stop disease progression and improve gum health.

Many patients see reduced pocket depths, less bleeding, and firmer gum tissue. Individual results vary based on home care and overall health.

How the Gum Treatment Appointment Goes

01

We begin with a comprehensive periodontal evaluation.

We measure pocket depths around each tooth, check for bleeding, recession, and mobility, and take digital X‑rays to assess bone levels. We also review your medical history for risk factors.

02

We discuss the findings and recommend a treatment plan.

If you have gingivitis, we may choose a routine cleaning with improved home care. For periodontitis, we usually recommend scaling and root planing, sometimes with laser or antibiotic adjuncts.

03

We administer local anesthesia.

Our specialists numb the gums and surrounding areas. You should not feel scraping or discomfort during the procedure.

04

We perform scaling and root planing.

We remove plaque and calculus from above and below the gum line. Then we smooth the root surfaces. It helps gums reattach. This makes it harder for bacteria to recolonize.

05

We may add a laser or local antibiotic.

Some deeper pockets do not respond well to SRP alone. For them we may recommend laser therapy or placement of Arestin. These are adjuncts; they do not replace SRP.

06

We schedule a re‑evaluation and maintenance.

Approximately 4–6 weeks after treatment, we measure pocket depths again. If improvement is seen, you will need periodontal maintenance visits every 3–4 months to prevent relapse.
