Arestin is a topical antibiotic used for periodontal pockets. It contains minocycline hydrochloride in tiny biodegradable microspheres. After scaling and root planing, our team places the powder directly into selected gum pockets. The medication releases slowly for about 21 days, which helps reduce certain bacteria linked to periodontitis.
Arestin goes directly into the gum pocket instead of treating the whole body.
Very little medication enters the bloodstream compared with many oral antibiotics.
Some pockets need more help after scaling and root planing. Arestin may improve the chance of pocket reduction.
The treatment usually takes only a minute or two per pocket and does not require drilling or stitches.
We clean below the gumline first. Arestin should not be placed around heavy buildup or in a pocket that has not been properly cleaned.
After deep cleaning, we reevaluate the gum pockets. Sites that remain 5 mm or deeper with bleeding may benefit from Arestin.
We isolate and dry the pocket, then place the minocycline powder with a small applicator. Most patients feel only mild pressure.
The microspheres dissolve on their own. You do not need another procedure to remove them.
About 4 to 6 weeks later, we measure the pocket again and review your response to treatment.
